Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day season of Lent. WPC members and friends are encouraged to observe Ash Wednesday by attending our special Worship Service at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary (childcare provided). The simple service will feature scripture readings, prayer, a meditation, an opportunity to reflect on lenten disciplines, the imposition of ashes, and the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The ancient practice of imposing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful gives Ash Wednesday its name. The church father Tertullian (c160-215AD) writes of the practice as “a public expression of repentance and of our human frailty that stands in need of Christ.” The ashes remind us forcefully of our need for redeeming grace as they recall words from the liturgy for Christian burial — “earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust” — words that will someday be spoken over us all. Please join us.
