Music at Westwood Concert: Heroically Haydn
Sunday, June 28th at 5:00pm
Music at Westwood will present our Chancel Choir & Chamber Orchestra in Franz Joseph Haydn’s vividly hopeful “Mass in Time of War” within the inspirational setting of our sanctuary on Sunday, June 28, at 5pm.
Haydn composed this mass in August 1796 when Austria most feared invasion. Depicting the highly problematic atmosphere of his time, the composer’s effective references to battle in terms of orchestration and text is truly brilliant. The use of the timpani has given this masterwork the alternate “Paukenmesse,” or “Kettledrum Mass.” Also scheduled is the 2001 violin concerto penned by our own Maria Newman entitled Lux Aeterna.
