The 2015 WPC Women’s Retreat was held the last weekend of October, with our Guest Speaker/Facilitator, Rev. Jacoba (Kobie) Vermaak, Pastor at Wilshire Presbyterian Church.
The Theme: “I Will Change Your Name”
We looked at different stories in the Bible of God changing someone’s name and discussed how it related to our lives and experience of self. These names may be a secret one, known only to us. Because of experiences of abuse, or neglect that may have happened a long time ago, we may have come to believe that our real name is “unlovable” or ‘shameful’ or ‘worthless.’ God has a new name for you. It is ‘beloved,’ ‘precious,’ ‘wonderful.’ Our God is in the business of name change, heart surgery, and healing the deepest wounds.
We talked about how we have been named, by others, by ourselves, by our circumstances– how we have internalized it, how it has shaped how we view ourselves, others, and God. We explored new names God bestowed on us, for instance instead of “Failure” or “Deficient” (I am not good enough, I don’t measure up, I need to proof myself constantly), we are named “Chosen” and so forth.
Nearly fifty women attended the Mary & Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes for a weekend of rest, fellowship, and spiritual renewal.
