WPC is blessed with a rich heritage in sacred classical music. “Song is a response which engages the whole self in prayer,” states our Book of Order. Indeed, prayerful reflection and joyful expression are at the core of our music program. WPC’s music encompasses traditional hymns, anthems, and spirituals sung by the congregation and the Chancel Choir. Among the beautiful traditions of WPC are the processionals, introits, and sung responses of the Chancel Choir or Chamber Singers. Often, the Westwood Brass Ensemble, Westwood Chamber Orchestra, or members of the congregation will add to the festive service with instrumental music.
WPC’s youth and children’s choirs perform regularly during the year providing young people with the opportunity to sing God’s praises. Full youth musicals—featuring original and new compositions—and the annual Christmas Pageant are high points for families in the WPC year.
It is truly a wonderful gift to be blessed with the opportunity to make marvelous music to the glory of God! Please join with us in our endeavors at Westwood Presbyterian Church as we raise our voices to the heavens!
It is clear that music and community help our world to engage in the search to realize its unlimited potential. The arts are a marvelous outlet for emotion and passion. Indeed, the creativity involved, be it from the standpoint of the listener, or of the artist him/herself, raises our minds and our hearts to a much higher plane. Music has the power to heal, as well as the strength and influence to connect the soul and the intellect. Meaningful art throughout history has illustrated this very clearly, having blazed a path of the tradition of great music-making within the house of God worldwide. Let us perpetuate the tradition together!
Here at Westwood Presbyterian, we stand strongly, and with great loyalty, as committed members of our community as a whole, and believe wholeheartedly that, “it takes a village.” We consider very seriously the role that the arts play in this interface. Thank you for walking the journey with us.
With the very warmest of regards,
Director of Music and Choirmaster
