Hoffman Hall
Please join us on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:30pm in Hoffman Hall as we discuss Educated by Tara Westover. Tara Westover is the youngest child of a survivalist father who forbade her to attend school. In the first section of her memoir, Westover describes her turbulent childhood in the mountains of Idaho where her “home schooling” was erratic at best. Then, as a 10 year old, she was made to work in her father’s scrap yard where she and her brothers often suffered burns and other traumatic injuries. At 17 she studied to pass the ACT exam and defied her father by leaving home to attend Brigham Young University. There her determination and love of learning transformed her, taking her on to Harvard and to Britain where she earned a doctorate from Cambridge. The reviewer in Psychology Today observed: “Whether fully accurate or only partially so, Educated is a deeply inspiring and thought-provoking read,” It will certainly offer a great many topics for discussion with our leader, Mary Fish Hardin.
